My favorite Halloween costume ever was one I made myself. I cut up a big box to make a sandwich board. On one side I pasted pictures and slogans for Gerald Ford; on the other, Jimmy Carter. It was just days before the 1976 presidential election. When I got to the door, instead of saying "trick or treat," I asked whoever answered if they were a Republican or Democrat. If the "wrong" side was facing front, I would maneuver the sandwich board so that I was either the staunch Republican or Democrat that would get more candy. Some of the people were so tickled they'd invite me in so the rest of the family could have a look at me (I had to go in sideways as the sandwich board is not the most graceful garment ever created).
