[Brandy Cruthird] founded Body By Brandy 4 Kidz in 2006 to invest in the health of Boston's children of low-income families and give them a safe and welcoming place to work out and learn about healthy lifestyle habits. Marin County's "healthy behavior" rates high in the latest nationwide poll released by Gallup, Healthways and America's Health Insurance Plans. The "Well-Being Index" - designed to be the Dow Jones of health in assisting policymakers on resource allocation - is an ongoing daily survey that started in January 2008, surveying 1,000 Americans 350 days per year on "life evaluations, emotional health, physical health, healthy behavior, work environment and basic access." Results are divided by states and congressional districts: California's 6th Congressional District, including Matin County and most of Sonoma County, ranked 44 out of 435 on overall "well-being," but ranked 6 out of 435 on "healthy behavior" in the nation. In a recent editorial, we noted that nominal military outlays exceeded $500 billion for the first time last year and that real (i.e., inflation-adjusted) defense spending had increased an average of 7.4 percent per year during the five years since September 11.
