BELFAST - "Belfast - Then and Now" is the topic at the Belfast Historical Society meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at the Belfast Free Library, Abbott Room. Kevin Johnson, photo-archivist at the Penobscot Marine Museum will present vintage images of Belfast selected from the Charles R. Coombs and Eastern Illustrating and Publishing Co. collections, paired with recent photographs of the same scenes. Johnson has been working on cataloging and digitalizing both photograph collections and has been doing presentations of these historic images throughout the state.

There is a small, fortunate group of authors who are paid to travel, dine sumptuously and drink well: food writers. Easy to overlook, tucked in among the recipe collections and sumptuous photograph albums on the library shelves, their books are worth ferreting out. Browse the cookbook section if you have time, but the quickest way to find them is to ask your librarian.
I have been a big fan of photograph books, those new self- published editions that let users create photography collections that look professional with high-quality paper and bound covers. I have tried many of them over the years, mostly as gifts for my parents, wife and friends. Some results were excellent; others were, to be polite, less so. One of the most frustrating parts is that the software provided to make the books is usually very rigid and not very customizable.
