Defense will be the name of the game as the Portland Pirates open the season on the road tonight against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
The Pirates are in their first season as the AHL affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes, where defense and goaltending have provided the keys to whatever success the NHL team has had during the past two seasons. Phoenix was the sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs last season.

PORTLAND - Maine's Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League are going to become an affiliate of the Phoenix Coyotes of the National Hockey League.
CEO Brian Petrovek made the announcement Monday. For the last three years the Pirates had been affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres.

The ice at First Niagara Center was turned into your average Saturday at the arcade as the Buffalo Sabres staged a rat-a-tat-tat night at the shooting gallery against the Phoenix Coyotes. The problem was simple: The Sabres didn't hit nearly enough targets to get the big prize.
The Sabres peppered Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith with 45 shots on goal, equaling their season high, and fired 30 other times without hitting the net. They scored only twice.

MOYES AGREES TO SELL COYOTES TO NHL: Phoenix Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes has agreed to sell the bankrupt franchise to the NHL. The agreement, which still must be approved by Judge Redfield T. Baum, was announced in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Monday after attorneys met for more than an hour during a recess in a status hearing on the case.
Former coach Wayne Gretzky, who has a $22.5 million claim in the case, has not agreed to the deal.

The Legislature that this year opted to increase the number of specialty license plates by 32 percent.
The dozen new plates include the ironic Tea Party plate, which will fund small-government groups with government money; a plate for the embattled Phoenix Coyotes hockey team, which may well move away from Arizona; an organ donor plate; a plate for women military veterans; and one honoring the state's centennial.

GLENDALE, Ariz. - Chris Campoli scored a power-play with 6:34 remaining and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Phoenix Coyotes, 2-1, on Sunday night.
Campoli, acquired from Ottawa on Feb. 28, scored his first goal for Chicago when he took a cross-crease pass from Jonathan Toews and put a shot into the vacated left side of the net before Ilya Bryzgalov, covering the right side, could recover.
