Here Hodgson tackles Hegel's views in a theme-by-theme manner-for example, he discusses Hegel's thoughts on worship, creation, reconciliation, and the relationship between Christianity and non-Christian religions. Hodgson's primary aim is to show that Hegel's philosophy of religion offers us a workable middle position between the "reigning dogmatisms of our time"-namely, "philosophical agnosticism and rehgious fundamentalism" (p. 284).
Rather, he devotes a chapter each to (i) the evidential problem of evil, that there is more evil in the world than one would expect if there were an omnipotent and perfectly loving deity; (ii) the problem of the hiddenness of God, that the existence, nature, and will of God are not as clear as they should be assuming that there is a God who desires to be known and worshipped; and, (iii) the problem that the miracles attributed to God are morally arbitrary and thereby cast doubt on the goodness of God. A final point: given how often the recently deceased pope spoke of "the gospel of life" and inveighed against "a culture of death," to say nothing of the Gospel's invocation to life (John 10:10; 14:6), one should at least address these claims when dealing with Nietzsche's dismissal of Christianity as life-denying.
