  • Having successfully completed the course of study prescribed by the Archdiocese of Baltimore, 52 students were awarded certificates of graduation on June 2 from St. Philip Neri Catholic School. The 2011 Presidents Award for Educational Excellence was awarded to 12 students who achieved a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who scored at the 85th percentile or higher on their standardized testing in either total math, total language or both.

  • Mark Forrest an acclaimed Irish tenor, whose melodic voice has filled concert halls and cathedrals from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican and who has sung inspirational hymns for Pope John Paul II and Mother Theresa is coming to St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 6401 S. Orchard Road to fill their church with hymns and melodies. Forrest will perform a selection of inspirational and praise hymns as well as contemporary music at 7 p.m. Nov. 6. Included will be a special performance by the St. Philip Neri Children's Choir.

  • Philip Dempsey, Tim Fair, Brandon Hughes and Joel Kenney, eighth- grade students at St. Philip Neri School, got hands-on engineering experience when they were chosen to attend the Maryland Quality Initiative Civil Engineering Expo Oct. 29 at Michael's Eighth Avenue in Glen Burnie. The expo is held each year and is sponsored by the Maryland State Highway Administration and several local engineering firms based here in Maryland. Schools throughout the county are invited each year to send students who excel in math and science. The event is designed to give students an overview about the different careers involved with civil engineering and how it affects the lives of millions of people each year.

  • Since the age of 7, Anne Nelson has been part of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and now, five decades later, she has been elected as the national regent-elect of the organization. After being elected at the group's national convention in Buffalo, Nelson is second-in-command among five national officers who determine policy and administer the organization nationally.

  • Beauty and the Beast, Jr." a traditional fairy tale about a captive girl and the beast who becomes her friend will be presented as this year's St. Philip Neri School production. The production is a condensed version of the Broadway hit musical "Beauty and the Beast." The 80-minute production will showcase the talents on and off stage of several of the school's students from grades five to eight.

  • Carnival time is coming next week when St. Philip Neri Catholic Church's annual festivities return Thursday to May 14 at 6405 S. Orchard Road. Thrill seekers and traditionalists alike can enjoy 18 rides, this year provided by a new company.

  • St. Philip Neri School held its eighth-grade graduation ceremony honoring the class of 2009. A graduation Mass was held at St. Philip Neri Church followed by a reception in the hall. Of the 62 graduates, 16 were accepted into Catholic high schools.

  • In celebration of American Education Week, St. Philip Neri Catholic School, 6401 S. Orchard Road, will hold an open house from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. On Sept. 8, 1965, the school opened with students attending kindergarten through fourth grade. Forty-five years later, the school has an enrollment of over 400 students, in prekindergarten through eighth grade.

  • There are only a few days left to purchase discounted tickets to the Kelly-Miller circus, which will raise the big top on the St. Philip Neri School grounds on Monday for two performances. Shows will begin at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m., and will feature traditional circus acts, including clowns, trapeze performances and live animals.

  • A kindergartner at St. Philip Neri School recently approached Monsignor Francis X. Zorbach recently with an unusual request. Monsignor, I want a magic wand," he recalled her saying.
