  • He's still a student, but one of the featured soloists in the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus' "Tribute to Opera" concert on Saturday is a veteran performer here. Luther Lewis III, a 23-year-old senior in the University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, was a Signature School junior when he performed in the chorus of the philharmonic concert version "Carmen," and a senior when he sang the role of Crab Man in the philharmonic's "Porgy and Bess.

  • Only a couple of selections were obvious crowd pleasers. One was "0 mio babbino caro" ("Oh, my dear papa") for soprano from Giacomo Puccini's Gianni Schicchi - a much later composition from 1918, but who would miss a chance to perform the soaring melody that became synonymous with Tuscan hillside romance in the film A Room with a View? Another was Gaetano Donizetti's dolorous tenor aria "Una furtiva lagrima" ("A furtive tear") from L'Elisir d'Amore. (A young Luciano Pavarotti's dramatic rendition of it is worth a viewing on YouTube.) Lesser-known choices included a soprano solo and a duet from a rarely performed opera by Pietro Mascagni, L'Amico Fritz.

  • It was a songfest Saturday night when about 65 singers from Martile Rowland's Opera Theatre of the Rockies joined the Colorado Springs Philharmonic for two of opera's most famous second acts -- from Bizet's "Carmen" and Johann Strauss' "Die Fledermaus. Adding to the attraction was Christopher Wilkins, the popular former music director of the Colorado Springs Symphony. The result was one of the season's largest and most enthusiastic audiences.

  • An acclaimed European opera, performed by children for children, is coming in January to The Victory. Brundibar," composed in the years preceding World War II, is a story of the triumph of good will over evil. Although it is set during a dark historical period, "Brundibar" is charming, humorous and inspiring, said Alfred Savia, music director of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

  • Thursday at Artpark, high notes mixed with the sounds of high summer, as the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra presented "The Best of Italian Opera. On this sultry night, Verdi was helped along by choruses of cicadas. The hall was full of fluttering programs, as people fanned themselves. Outside in the heat at intermission, one opera fan was overheard telling another, "Pretend we're in Italy."

  • Bangor Symphony Orchestra music director Lucas Richman had tickets to go to the Grammy Awards, held on Feb. 13 in Los Angeles, but travel plans prevented him from going. So, in lieu of donning a tuxedo and walking the red carpet, Richman downloaded the live online feed of the nontelevised portion of the awards and sat down to watch with his son, Max. Richman was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement with Accompanying Vocalist and Best Classical Crossover Album, for "Baba Yetu," a piece composed by Christopher Tin that Richman conducted with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He was nominated alongside luminaries such as Bobby McFerrin, Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble, opera legend Jessye Norman and cellist Matt Haimovitz.

  • Mozart, even when he's writing a symphony for a full orchestra, operatically, he's thinking about characters in the music and in the sound," explains Boise Philharmonic Music Director Robert Franz. "He had already written many of his most famous operas, and was steeped in the theater, so there's just no way that that didn't inspire him. You can hear it in the music - you can hear the characters come alive. To drive home Jupiter's inherent drama, Franz invited Opera Idaho soprano Jennifer Welch-Babidge, tenor Karim Sulayman and the Opera Idaho Chorus to work their diaphragms during the philharmonic's performance of the piece in January 2010. Galvanized by what he describes as Idaho's "incredibly rich and deep artistic tradition," Franz tailored much of the philharmonic's '09-'10 season...

Triggered by declining contributions and season ticket sales that have led to annual budget deficits, the city's original big three performing arts groups have been discussing ways to combine business operations since August.

  • Laura Aikin is in town. She is the Clarence High School grad who went on to star on the stages of the world's great opera houses. She joins the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra this weekend for Richard Strauss' famed "Four Last Songs" and Seven Early Songs of Alban Berg. This rich, gilded music -- Viennese, from the turn of the last century -- has become a specialty of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. The Friday morning "Coffee Concert" began with Strauss' tone poem "Don Juan," and as a cooling chaser, ended with Debussy's "La Mer.
