All of the reasons the Philadelphia Phillies were an unpopular pick, both in September and October, to advance to their second straight World Series were on display Wednesday night. Their 2008 World Series MVP, Cole Hamels, continued a postseason tailspin to match a subpar regular season. Their once-impeccable bullpen kept getting handed big leads and kept making them smaller.
And yet these Phillies are headed back to the World Series. And what's more, they might be stronger than ever.

I'll take the Phillies, and you can have everybody else and have a hard time beating me at first base, ([Ryan Howard]), second base, ([Chase Utley]), and shortstop ([Jimmy Rollins]). You don't have to like third baseman [Pedro Feliz], but he 11 be 20-90 at the end of the year with good defense. [Pat Burrell] takes a beating, and it's not fair. He wont win a Gold Glove, but he's productive. The pitching is OK, but they've got a real problem if [Brad Lidge] can't close.

WHAT WE KNOW Health permitting, the team's starting rotation will be among the deepest in the National League. From RHP Kevin Millwood through RHP Brett Myers, the quintet is balanced-with three righties and two lefties-and durable. Millwood, RHP Vicente Padilla and LHP Randy Wolf all topped 200 innings last season, with Myers coming in at 193. The team will strike out more than its share, with IB Jim Thome, LF Pat Burrell, RF Bobby Abreu and SS Jimmy Rollins leading the charge.
