Legislation pending in the California state assembly would allow pharmacies to send patient prescription information to advertisers. However, information sent to patients on behalf of pharmacies must "pertain only to the prescribed course of medical treatment" and that "it may not mention any other pharmaceutical products". Additionally, the bill stipulates that materials sent to patients on behalf of pharmacies shall include specified disclosures regarding whether the pharmacy receives direct or indirect remuneration for making that written communication.

Mount Vernon High School's Biology 3 students rarely work in their classroom. And that's ideal for teacher Bernie Riedford, who has built an impressive roster of professionals to welcome medically- minded students into their workdays.
For a semester, students leave school to observe and actively assist professionals on the job. The teen-agers gain direct exposure to about a dozen medical areas, including pharmacy, respiratory therapy, general practice, dentistry and medical social work. There also are rotations with the Vanderburgh County Coroner and at Hawthorne Animal Clinic.
