HUNTINGTON - Marshall University's planned pharmacy school might have hit a snag in its attempts to get accredited, but the school's chief of staff said it still plans to open its pharmacy school in the fall of 2012. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education did not authorize an onsite evaluation of Marshall's proposed pharmacy school during the council's June 16 meeting, according to a "report of proceedings" from the meeting.

• Pharmacy Ed Council Firms Up Bias Rules

The group that accredits continuing pharmacy education providers is wrestling with ways to avoid the taint of commercial bias as its members begin preparing pharmacists for Medicare Part D. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) recently circulated its Criteria for quality for feedback on possible changes, including clarification of the commercialization criteria. To prevent commercial bias more effectively, ACPE follows the lead of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, which recently issued tougher disclosure rules and requirements for resolving conflicts.

• Way Paved for Kroger Expansion

NORMAL - Kroger, 1550 E. College Ave., won the City Council's approval for the addition of a gas station and remote drive-thru pharmacy kiosk Monday night, but council members are hoping to also get improved traffic flow out of the deal. The gas station will be built at the corner of Landmark Drive and College Avenue and the pharmacy kiosk will be to the west of the station. Kroger also will be constructing a new sign and has agreed to add landscaped islands in the parking lot.

• Pharmacy Schools Win Bid to Open in the Fall ; the National Accreditation Council Approves Programs at the University of New England and Husson University.

Maine's first two pharmacy schools will open this fall with approval from the national Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education. The University of New England in Portland and Husson University in Bangor both learned Monday that the council granted pre- candidacy status to their new pharmacy schools.
