Inflation has been slightly higher than projected. Measured by the consumer price index (CPI), inflation is now higher than 3%. A strong rise in prices for electricity and petrol has pushed up CPI inflation since autumn 2007. Inflation has increased in many countries. Oil and gas prices have risen further through spring. Capacity utilization in Norway is high. An ample supply of labor, strong productivity growth and considerable terms of trade gains through several years have boosted the growth potential of the Norwegian economy. Growth in the Norwegian economy seems to have slowed as expected in 2008 Q1. Enterprises in Norges Bank's regional network report high capacity utilization but moderating growth in most of the industries. Monetary policy in Norway is oriented towards annual con...

The key challenges include selecting the most suitable algae strains, growing these algal cells at optimal rates, engineering the metabolic pathways that control oil production to create cells pregnant with desirable oil products, and extracting the oil in an efficient and economic manner. According to Walter Kozumbo, manager of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research's bioenergy program, the Air Force uses about 2.5 billion gallons of jet fuel per year. Using large-scale fermentation tanks that currently churn out a wide variety of microbially-produced products- nutriceuticals, amino acids (lysine) for animal feeds, carpet fibers, components of infant formula, and laundry detergent enzymes- Solazyme hopes to fill existing petroleum pipelines with their diesel, which can run in un...

With the recent announcement that General Motors will build the first advanced lithium-ion battery for a mass-marketed electric vehicle that will power the new Chevy Volt at GM's Brownstown Battery Pack Assembly Plant, the carmaker and Michigan have taken center stage in the future of environmentally friendly vehicles. We recently had a chance to catch up with Denise Gray, director, GM Global Battery Systems Engineering, to learn more about what it all means for the automaker and the future of the company. - M. Amick
GRAY: It is important for GM, and the U.S., to strengthen domestic research, development and production of advanced batteries, including lithium-ion. GM has a wealth of automotive expertise that must be coupled to consumer battery technology to create automotive battery tec...
