The University of Missouri is asking a federal agency for more time to figure out how to best deal with radiation found in a historic campus building.
MU's Environmental Health and Safety office has removed some radiation from the basement and attic of Pickard Hall, but contamination still exists in pipes and ductwork behind walls, Director Peter Ashbrook said. Under regulations that took effect in 2007, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires buildings where naturally occurring radioactive material is found to be cleaned within two years and "decommissioned" -- which essentially means the building would be taken off the agency's watch list.

PARAMUS -- Every summer since Matt Kuchar was a kid, he and his family head to Newfound Lake in Bristol, N.H., to get away from it all.
It's a place where Kuchar worked for four summers, as his father, Peter, did before him, and where the names they scribbled on walls back then still can be found.

Inside the gallery the esteemed Caribbean artist, dressed in black and wearing a black fedora, held court in the crowded Drawing Room, where his work was on display. Hundreds of [Peter Minshall]'s carnival drawings dominated the walls. Line drawings, color renderings, and thumbnail sketches hung closely together in an unrestricted way, to give the effect of one of Minshall's massive signature carnival productions, such as "River" (1983), "Callaloo" (1984), or "Santimanitay" (1989), amidst much excited exclamation of recognition by Minshall for personal friends, carnival fans and thick-pressed art-aficionados, squeezed together for the exciting opening of "Looking at the Spirits: Peter Minshall's Carnival Drawings.
The exhibition is co-curated by Luis Camnitzer, The Drawing Center's vie...

Having family in the military, Lauren Modzianowski realized there was a need for a program that focused on sending homecomfort items to soldiers overseas. She then developed "Operation: Keep in Touch," which she used to send calling cards to soldiers. "My uncle is currently serving in Iraq. He mentioned that lower ranking soldiers rarely see the benefits of fundraisers like this, so I specifically created this project to target, and help those who are protecting the United States of America." [Lauren Mlodzianowski] will be a junior at the University of the Incarnate Word in the fall.
[Lorah Janelle Smith]'s Gold Award project, "Project PJ's," was designed to benefit the children of St. Peter-St. Joseph Children's Home. She helped paint murals on the walls and install new curtains, cabin...

I spent the weekend visiting Johannesburg, a city that proudly proclaims to be the "New York of Africa." They're less proud when it comes to Jo'burg's reputation as the murder and rape capital of the world.
Driving through the predominately white suburb to Peter's house, where I was staying, all I saw were high brick walls, iron gates, and barbed wire. Signs that read "BRINKS," "ADT," and "secURITY" decorated the treelined residential streets.
One night we ate with Peter at an outdoor Thai restaurant that faced a popular urban square. I watched Blacks and whites peruse the street heading to movie theatres, restaurants, and bars. At the head of the table, I listened quietly to a heated debate about America's "cultural bankruptcy," poor foreign policy, and the uselessness of patriotism. A...

Who: Peter Shindler, bassist for Talking to Walls. While adding the fat bottom to Talking to Walls' confessional rock music, Peter gives the music a solid backbone, letting singer/guitarist/ songwriter Brian Kelly's tunes more bite. The bassist loves great four-stringers like Tony Levin, but it able to use those influences and condense them to a more pop-rock sound with TTW. As for the mix, Peter chose a bunch of tunes that influenced him as a musician, and one that's a bit self-serving ... but, hey, it's a good tune. "Where you can see him: Shindler and the rest of TTW will be at Cafe Nine at around 10 p.m. Tuesday, the first night of a great two nights of local music at the State Street venue. TTW will perform with Mercy Meadows and Sandra Lauren, before giving way to The Tires and Er...

PORTLAND - Sitting on a stool in the center of a TV studio stuffed with anchor desks, fake brick walls and wires hanging from the ceiling, the Rev. Peter Panagore closed his eyes and meditated.
For several minutes he sat there, his head bowed, as a technician prepared the TelePrompTer and camera monitors flickered.
