  • Ben Affleck's directorial debut "Gone Baby Gone" has received near-unanimous praise from the nation's film critics. It's been described as everything from "a superior police procedural" (Roger Ebert) to "a mesmerizing thriller" (Peter Travers). I guess I must have missed something.

  • We also had to say farewell to, among others, television news legend WALTER CRONKITE, songstress MARY TRAVERS (of Peter, Paul and Mary), author E. LYNN HARRIS, comedian SOUPY SALES, comedic actress BEA ARTHUR, actor (and dancer) PATRICK SWAYZE, actress ALAINA REED HALL ("227"), songwriter ELLIE GREENWICH, actress FARRAH FAWCETT and former "Tonight Show" sidekick ED McMAHON. One of the biggest scandals of the year was CHRIS BROWN brutalizing his girlfriend, RIHANNA. No one knows all the details, but there was a strong backlash against Brown from the public and the industry. However, he apologized to Rihanna and to the public, and also paid his dues after his sentencing. Rihanna's album, "Rated R," is a smash and, surprisingly, Brown has made major inroads with his album, "Graffiti. HAI...

  • Well, it did, but the interesting thing about these "bad" reviews, is that they were mostly from small markets and small-minded critics who tended to be offended by the R-rated content-I'm surprised it didn't get an X-or from places like San Francisco where the Morning Comicle sneered that it wasn't dirty enough. Yet if you go to www. Metacritic.com, you'll discover that Roger Ebert and the other Chicago papers, the Los Angeles Times and Weekly, the Monitor, Peter Travers, the NY Post, the Hollywood Reporter and quite a few other prestigious critics and publications actually liked The Libertine. Yet isn't promoting the bad news always more fun? [Johnny Depp] and Malkovich ([Charles]) exchange quips, barbs and other witticisms until your nerve endings are sparking with pleasure. And when...

  • Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia), the casino owner who was taken for more than $100 million in Ocean's Eleven, possesses a monk's ability to let go of grudges, and fronts the boys $30 million or so for the scheme. Sure, it's easy to say that you wouldn't lend the people who robbed you of huge sums millions more, based onty on a'verbal agreement, but these,,boys are exceptionally charming. Just try saying no to [Brad Pitt] and [George Clooney]. The ease of overcoming obstacles is mirrored by the acting, if not the cinematography, which is crisp, rapid and stylized. For the leading men, it isn't acting, per say, so much as it is looking good, being cool and delivering lines. Of Brad Pitt's performance in Ocean's Thirteen, Peter Travers, writing in Rolling Stone, commented that Pitt had star p...

  • NEW HAVEN -- That this classical music reviewer randomly chose a seat next to Peter Yarrow and Mary Travers of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary at Monday night's Appalachia Waltz Trio concert (moved indoors to the Yale Law School auditorium from the school's courtyard) might have been a sign of changing times. Fiddler- violinist-composer Mark O'Connor's International Festival of Arts & Ideas program, called "Crossing Bridges," was a picnic of original music from his smash "Appalachia Waltz" and "Appalachian Journey" CDs, collaborations with Edgar Meyer and Yo-Yo Ma that are still causing ripples in the classical music world. In the trio, violist Carol Cook and cellist Natalie Haas join O'Connor to present his compositions in a traditional European instrumental setting.
