Singing for Schubert
To say the least, Franz Peter Schubert was an active composer. By the time he died on Nov. 19, 1828, at just 31, he had written more than 600 songs, nine symphonies, six Masses, much other sacred music, a lot of incidental and dance music for the stage, several operas, and scores of chamber, piano, and secular choral works.

Music, like water, makes its own way through the world. One piece might grab public favor with the speed of an incoming tidal bore. Another becomes known more gradually, like a languid creek tracing a long route. Yet another grinds its way into notice as sluggishly as ice heaving in Arctic seas.
Water has fascinated many composers, of course. Think of Mendelssohn's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony, and the many water-inspired pieces of Takemitsu. Or Hovhaness' And God Created Great Whales, Schubert's Die schne Mllerin, Britten's Peter Grimes, and a host of sailor songs and sea chanties. With a little stretching, even Handel's Water Music fits the genre; those suites were written to serenade King George I on a Thames barge.
