Staff report Robert Lepage's staging of Richard Wagner's four-part "Der Ring des Nibelungen" is the first new production of the work to grace New York City's Metropolitan Opera stage in more than two decades. Metropolitan Opera General Manager Peter Gelb will speak on the role of opera in America at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at the Strand Theatre in Rockland, as part of the Farnsworth Forum series. Farnsworth Director of Education Roger Dell will interview Gelb about live, high-definition broadcasts of Met operas in movie theaters around the world and the future of classical music.

Ironically, the addition of the in-theater simulcasts has also increased ticket sales at the Met by 7 percent, subscriptions by 12 percent. NEW YORK -- Stunned and astonished by the innovative "Madama Butterfly" which opened the Metropolitan Opera this fall, I marveled at the showmanship of Peter Gelb, the Met's new general manager. He made it available not only to the well-heeled opera lovers inside, but free to thousands watching and listening from seats outside and in Times Square. On that memorable opening night, electric with an excitement the Met has not known in years, Peter Gelb came near to achieving his dream -- confided to me a quarter century ago -- of emulating his idol, the great New York impresario Sol Hurok, for whom he worked as a callow youth.

The Peter Gelb era at the Metropolitan Opera is starting with an open house. The final dress rehearsal of Academy Award winner Anthony Minghella's new production of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" will be open to the public for free on Sept. 22, the company said Wednesday. The opera will start the season three days later.
