MORGANTOWN - Veteran educator C. Peter Magrath, the former president of three universities and a national higher education group, was named interim president of West Virginia University today. Magrath will succeed President Mike Garrison, who is stepping down Sept. 1 over a master's degree scandal involving the governor's daughter. Magrath will play a key role in helping the university rebuild its damaged national reputation and choose a permanent successor.
In 1990, [Peter Welch] ran for governor and lost to Republican Richard Snelling. Welch didn't hold public office again until 2001, when he was appointed by Gov. Howard Dean to fill a vacant Senate seat. Welch then ran for office on his own and won. He was also elected president pro tem, the Senate chamber's leader.
