, 89, of Atglen, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Genevieve R. Simmers Dolan, with whom he would have shared 40 years of marriage on April 25th. Born on March 23, 1921 in Glasgow, Scotland, he was the son of the late Felix and Martin Nina Fitzgerald Dolan.
Federal prosecutors opted not to bring criminal indictments stemming from an accounting scandal under Cornelius' predecessor, Peter Dolan. To strike that deal, Guidant Chairman Cornelius helped work two rival suitors - Boston Scientific and New Jersey-based Johnson & Johnson - into a bidding frenzy, even as the Indianapolis company rolled out waves of product-recall and product-defect announcements.
With conflicting pressures from investors, regulators and good- governance advocates, life can be tough for a corporate CEO, especially at pharmaceutical companies. Peter R. Dolan, who was ousted Tuesday at Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. at the urging of a federal monitor overlooking the drug company, was the third major pharmaceutical company chief executive to get the ax recently.
Two former top executives at Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. were indicted Wednesday on charges they schemed to exaggerate the drug maker's financial condition, while the company agreed to pay $300 million to settle charges of securities fraud. As part of a settlement with the U.S. Attorney in Newark, the New York-based drug giant accepted responsibility for its conduct, stripped Chief Executive Officer Peter Dolan of his chairman duties, and agreed to adopt a variety of other internal controls and measures.

Bristol-Myers, which fired its chief executive officer Peter Dolan in November, is already working with Sanofi-Aventis to jointly market blood pressure drug AvaPro and anti-clotting drug Plavix.
BOSTON - Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., under pressure from a court- appointed overseer, yesterday fired Chief Executive Peter Dolan just weeks after a deal he brokered to keep a generic competitor to the company's blockbuster drug Plavix off the market triggered a government investigation. Shares of Bristol-Myers, which have tumbled sharply during Dolan's five-year reign, closed up 4 percent at $24.32 amid heightened speculation the company could be up for sale.
Bristol-Myer's board fired [Peter R. Dolan] after meeting with federal Judge Frederick B. Lacey, who the night before had recommended that the company, which has major operations in New Jersey, fire both Dolan and [Richard K. Willard] for pursuing a deal to delay the introduction of generic Plavix by Canadian firm Apotex. Attempts to head off Apotex's patent challenge to Plavix led ultimately to its release of a generic version in the United States anyway.
