  • [Peter Bjorn] and John (or the sickeningly cute PB&J) are the latest in a long line of Scandinavian retrofuturist pop perfectionists as exemplified by the likes of the Concretes, the Cardigans and the really rather groovy Low Frequency in Stereo.

  • Peter Moren of Peter, Bjorn and John recently released a solo album, "The Last Tycoon," that takes its title from the book by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Noting that it's more low-key and folksier than the trio's usual sound, he also likes the way the title implies failure. It's kind of what's happening now in the world, with the record industry and people getting bought up and people getting sacked," Moren says. "It's kind of like the end of an era, but it's also kind of ironic. I'm not saying I'm the last tycoon, but I like the idea of failure.

  • Pop Lykke Li, "Wounded Rhymes" (Atlantic) Swedish songstress Lykke Li toughens up her 21st-century girl-group sound on "Wounded Rhymes," an aggressively emotional 10-song set likely to make her one of the breakout stars of 2011. The boldface example of the change from her 2008 debut, "Youth Novels," is the difference between "Little Bit," that album's coy, playful indie hit, and "Wounded's" tribal "Get Some," in which she promises, "I'm your prostitute, you gonna get some." (By prostitute, she means the kind of empowered "prostitute of the mind" found in Haruki Murakami's novel "The Wind Up Bird Chronicle," but I'm guessing that'll be lost on the dudes drooling over the pictures of a leathered-up Li in this month's Spin.) There are, however, also plenty of delicate, beau...

  • DEPECHE MODE, PETER, BJORN & JOHN, E Center, Aug. 25 WEST VALLEY CITY -- On May 12 of this year, Depeche Mode lead singer Dave Gahan was hospitalized with gastroenteritis. While in the hospital, doctors removed a malignant tumor on his bladder.

  • This Friday, everyone's favorite seafaring scallywags. The Jugtown Pirates of Lake Champlain take the stage for an evening of sword-swingin', swashbuckling fun - old-time new-grass style. Their recently released self-titled debut is a rollicking affair, but the best way to experience these guys is live. Psychedelic anarchists SeepeopleS open the show. But come early for local bluesman Seth Yacovone's weekly acoustic gig. Upstairs at Club Metronome, you can check in with Nashville's free-spirited rock maven Will Hoge, who will share the stage with PhUIy1S indie-roots revivalists Hoots and Helunouth. So that/ s the week at the bigger local venues. But there's obviously a lot more music in the region than that provided by Nectar's, Club Metronome and Higher Ground. Part of the fun - especi...

  • AFTER ALL THE outdoor concerts and festivals of the summer, it's just about time to start taking the music back inside - back to old standby rock 'n' roll clubs like the 31st Street Pub, metal and punk bars like the Smiling Moose, and of course that Pittsburgh institution, Gooski's. But as you say goodbye to Post-Gazette Pavilion and hello again to Pittsburgh's various indoor venues, you may have more options than you realize. On a slightly more indie tip, other sure things coming through town include the lonely strains of The Mountain Goats at the Rex Theatre (Sept. 27) and the layered atmospheres of Minus the Bear at Diesel (Sept. 29). If you're up for shaking what you got, VHS or Beta - one of the only dance-rock bands to play music that's actually sexy - plays Carnegie Mellon on Oct...

  • JOAN TOWER Made in America (Naxos) This album of three big Tower orchestral pieces, recorded in 2006 by Leonard Slatkin and the Nashville Symphony Orchestra, won the 2008 Grammy for best classical album. The eponymous title work is a large-scale meditation on "America the Beautiful" ("O beautiful, for spacious skies ..."), cleverly deconstructed and fragmented by the composer. It was the product of a national multipartner commissioning program that began in 2001, and the CD liner notes state that Tower geared the 13- minute piece to be playable by any of 65 variously sized American orchestras taking part. Without offense, it sounds like it. It's exceptionally accessible to listeners of just about any experience level, alternately pretty and powerful and crafted to give every orchestral ...

  • Say what you want about 21 the film, but this soundtrack is a phenomenal pastiche of indie, electro, pop, rock, psych and hip-hop flourishes. LCD Soundsystem's "Big Ideas," Rihanna's "Shut up and Drive," Arnon Tobin's "Always" soundscape, Broadcast's "Tender Button," Peter Bjorn and John's never-old "Young Folks" and Get Shakes' "Sister Self Doubt" (for fans of Datarock and Punks Jump Up). 21's one misstep is Mgmt's "Time to Pretend," which could've been the strongest track if only it hadn't been castrated of all references to heroin and fucking. (Not since M.I.A.'s MTV-ized "Paper Planes" has a great song sounded so wrong.)
