  • In a recent Republican debate, GOP White House hopefuls touched upon President Obama's failure to stop Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. In my opinion, if Mr. Obama is re-elected, Iran will get nuclear weapons. Why? Mr. Obama refuses to stand up to the ayatollahs; is retreating in Iraq, Afghanistan, Egypt and Libya; and is abandoning our allies in the region to Iran. As Mr. Obama withdraws for personal political reasons, our allies are being forced to come to terms with the ayatollahs who dominate Iran. Mr. Obama is sacrificing our country's interests overseas for his re-election priorities, just as he is sacrificing the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline project for the same end. He does this, in both cases, against the best interests of the American people and our country.

  • Since at least the late nineteenth century, U.S. presidents have engaged in substantial and unjustified deception in a variety of domains, and future presidents will continue to do so unless new mechanisms an created to ensure greater accountability and oversight. The problem is particularly apparent in two very different domains: personal health and foreign policy. Several presidents and presidential candidates have concealed grave health conditions that impaired their ability to govern. As future presidential candidates are unlikely to be more forthcoming about their health, the public interest should be protected by an independent medical panel to evaluate presidential candidates. In foreign policy, recent decades have seen several egregious cases of presidential deception, including...

  • A small technology firm is touting a new laser dazzler that temporarily blinds and disorients its target as the "ultimate in nonlethal technology," but its efforts to sell the weapon to law enforcement agencies are likely to prove controversial. The manufacturer says the weapon is ideal for riot and crowd control, for personal protection, and as an alternative to single- shot nonlethal weapons like the Taser high-voltage electric-dart gun. However, laser dazzlers used by the U.S. military in Afghanistan and Iraq have caused eye injuries to troops - including at least one case of blindness - in accidents or so-called "friendly fire" incidents. Some experts are concerned about the safety implications of putting the weapons in the hands of police officers.

  • That fact is evident in a two-inch stack of documents, obtained over the past 15 months under the Freedom of Information Act, that provides many details of Westhusing's suicide. The pile includes interviews with Westhusing's coworkers, diagrams of his sleeping quarters, interviews with his family members, and partially redacted reports from the Army's Criminal Investigation Command and Inspector General. The documents echo the story told by Westhusing's friends. "Something he saw [in Iraq] drove him to this," one Army officer who was close to Westhusing said in an interview. "The sum of what he saw going on drove him" to take his own life. "It's because he believed in duty, honor, country that he's dead. While the promotion was important, Westhusing was increasingly isolated. He did no...

  • The current global economic downfall reaps the majority of the headlines as one ineffective action after another only seems to increase (he cynicism of the public towards governments and the institutions of finance that created the mess. The solutions to the problems are all coming from the very people who created the mess in the first place. Most scarily, there is a planned summit of world leaders to be held next month to try and remedy the situation and get the economic globalization ball rolling again. No wonder we have heard nothing from the World Trade Organization (the group that "colludes" for a "new global governance"), nor from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, their associated corporate think tank, nor very little of anything from the institutes of the...
