Eleven fire departments across Iowa received a total of $942,365 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Included on the list were the Elkader Fire Department, $297,056; the Manchester Volunteer Fire Department $98,230; and the Dubuque Fire Department $46,156.
The funds will be used for training, equipment, personal protective equipment, vehicle acquisition, wellness and fitness and health and safety modifications to stations and facilities. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, is a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and was a co-sponsor of the legislation that authorized this program.

FEMA has awarded a $104,500 grant to the Dyersville Fire Department, according to a press release from the office of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.
The grant, which is through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Operations and Safety and Vehicle Acquisitions programs, will help purchase fire vehicles and supplement training, equipment and personal protective equipment.

Oregon OSHA will offer a series of workplace safety and health workshops during the month of June.
The free workshops cover topics such as safety committee basic training, personal protective equipment and violence in the workplace. Workshops will be offered June 3 at the Mary Tobias Education Center, in Tigard, and June 26 at the Portland Community College Small Business Development Center in the Lloyd Center Mall.

WASHINGTON -- The Salem Fire Department will receive a $32,205 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for training, equipment, personal protective equipment and other firefighter safety issues, Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, announced Friday.
The fire department's application for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant demonstrated the benefits that such funds would have on the "safety of firefighters and the safety of the community as a whole," Cannon said.

Caledonia U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) announced last week that the Caledonia Fire Department will receive a 2005 Assistance to Firefighter Grant of $29,700, provided by the United States Fire Administration.
The USFA is part of the Department of Homeland Security's Office for Domestic Preparedness and provides the grant to support training, wellness and fitness, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, and modifications to fire stations and facilities.
