  • Nursing home tax is fully refundable In a recent letter, it was noted that New York State charges a nursing home assessment on bills for long-term care. This can be a considerable expense, coming at a time when a family or spouse is traumatized by the conditions leading to skilled nursing care. Anyone who is paying for this expense out of pocket or through a long-term care policy should be aware that New York will fully refund the assessment at tax time. This is accomplished by filing form IT-258, Claim for Nursing Home Assessment Credit, along with the state personal income tax form.

  • West Virginians aged 65 and older are being reminded that they must file a personal income tax return this year if they want to receive a special senior citizen tax credit. • Estate planning The qualified personal residence trust (QPRT) remains as a method of estate tax reduction. A form of grantor retained income trust, the QPRT involves transferring the title of a house to a trustee for a fixed period of time, at the end of which the beneficiaries assume possession. The tax benefits arise from the value of the house being set at time of transfer, with appreciation not accruing to the estate of the transferor. Sale of the property or the death of the transferor prior to the end of the QPRT lessens the trust's value.

  • I applaud Gov. LePage's recent budget proposal. Our state faces serious fiscal challenges in the coming two years, and Gov. LePage has put forward a proposal that actually increases funding to education by $63 million and invests in roads and bridges without borrowing. Along with this, it will bring much needed sanity to our welfare system, with true welfare reforms. On top of these accomplishments, it will provide $203 million in tax relief to Maine families in the form of larger personal income tax deductions, elimination of the marriage penalty, and a lower tax rate for tens of thousands of Maine families. It also provide incentives to employers to invest and create jobs in Maine.

  • If it's true that you only get out of something what you put into it, then the key to fixing Long Island's woes lies in our getting back more of the tax dollars we put into state coffers. In recent years, the deficit between what Long Island taxpayers send to Albany, primarily in the form of personal income tax, sales tax, corporate taxes and mortgage recording taxes, and what we get back in state aid, mostly through payments to local governments and school districts, state pensions and Medicaid is nearly $3 billion annually. That's highway robbery. New York state has been using Long Island as a cash cow for decades and that injustice must end if we are to have a real chance at addressing our economic and infrastructure problems. According to a recent study by Martin Cantor and the Econ...
