  • We empirically surveyed and analyzed existing standards for the treatment of perpetrators of domestic violence across the United States. Specific areas examined included: presence and scope; administrative entity for certifying; screening and risk assessment protocols; minimum length of treatment; theoretical or conceptual orientation; treatment content; preferred or allowable modalities of treatment; whether research findings are mentioned; methods for revising standards; and minimum education and training required for providers. We examined trends using several methods including comparisons between present and previous survey data (Maiuro et al., 2001). Positive trends were evident including increased use of multivariate models of treatment content, use of an intake assessment prior t...

  • For all the debate and controversy following the recent deadly rampage in Tucson, Ariz. a few weeks ago, there is no doubt that alleged killer and would-be assassin Jared Loughner should not have been able to acquire the semi-automatic Glock 19 and high-capacity magazine used in the shooting spree. Under federal law, a database known as the National Instant Criminal Background Check System is supposed to include the names of mentally ill people, violent and drug criminals, perpetrators of domestic violence and others who are prohibited from owning handguns. Gun dealers are supposed to check a buyer's ID against that database.

  • Both the House and Senate have passed versions of a bill that would toughen state sentencing laws for the worst perpetrators of domestic violence. The sentencing reforms in the bill, which passed unanimously in both chambers, were a major priority of Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna this year. He estimates the tougher sentences would apply to about 10 percent of those convicted of domestic violence crimes those with long records of abuse.

  • In an effort to prevent volatile home situations from turning deadly, Gov. Martin O'Malley will propose legislation to let judges order alleged perpetrators of domestic violence to surrender any guns they possess when the judges impose seven-day temporary protective orders. O'Malley, speaking at a House of Ruth battered women's shelter on Monday, said he will also propose requiring judges to strip abusers of their guns upon concluding, by clear and convincing evidence, that abuse has occurred and issuing a final protective order.

  • Programs Batterer intervention prevention programs are educational classes designed to hold perpetrators of domestic violence accountable for their abusive behavior and actions, according to the West Virginia Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

  • This study investigated the effects of a pregroup motivational intervention for domestic abuse perpetrators. Men presenting for treatment at a community domestic violence agency ( N = 108) were assigned to receive either a two-session intake using the techniques of motivational interviewing (MI) or a structured intake (SI) control. All participants were then referred to a cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) program in groups homogeneous with respect to intake condition. The motivational intake led to more constructive insession behavior during the early phase of group CBT, greater compliance with group CBT homework assignments, higher late session therapist ratings of the working alliance, and more help seeking outside of the domestic violence program. No significant effects of intake ...

  • WASHINGTON, May 25 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Women are more likely to be killed by an intimate partner than to die at the hands of a stranger. Violent partners armed with firearms are especially dangerous. But state laws to take guns away from likely or actual perpetrators of domestic violence vary widely, and even where there are laws to do so they are often not enforced. Those and other conclusions emerge from "Intimate Partner Violence and Firearms," a new set of studies published in the June issue of Evaluation Review.

  • The words "domestic violence" typically invite images of bruised women and children - and male perpetrators. But the real picture of domestic violence isn't so clear-cut. And the solution to family violence is far more complex than our current criminal justice approach can handle.

  • Clinical observations with both victims and perpetrators further revealed frequent cycling through periods of separation and reunification, a steady accrual of negative consequences associated with relationship problems and abuse, and the need for a lengthy period of self-evaluation and support prior to significant life change, circumstances that resemble the change process for addictions and health behavior promotion where the TTM had been successfully applied. Despite many conceptual and measurement challenges, their results indicate that greater attention to stages of change and motivation to change in interventions for both perpetrators and victims of intimate partner abuse may have considerable payoff in refining our intervention methods for domestic violence and abuse.
