VALENCIA - On a night when Valencia struggled with its passing, hurt itself with untimely missed serves and Katie Hank often had to take as many as five swings during a rally to put a ball away, veteran coach Ray Sanchez looked to an unlikely source to provide his team with some stability.
With Valencia tied with Villa Park midway through the fifth game of their Southern Section Div. I-A girls' volleyball playoff opener Tuesday, Sanchez called on reserve Alexa Schmidt, and the junior came up aces.

A new business park being created on a former rail yard in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley has landed its first development: a growing local company that makes frozen pizzas and sells them in supermarkets in the United States and Canada.
Palermo Villa Inc. has agreed to buy 14 acres at the city-owned business park, which covers 134 acres between Miller Park's east parking lots and Falk Corp.'s manufacturing plant, 3001 W. Canal St., Mayor Tom Barrett said Thursday. The company plans to begin building a facility with over 100,000 square feet by this fall, said Giacomo Fallucca, president.

CHINO
Chino police are searching for the person who stabbed a man in a park Nov. 23 after a fight. Officers responded at 8:07 p.m. to Villa Park at 13515 Third St. after getting a report of a fight and a stabbing, said Chino police Lt. Keith Bussard. When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from three stab wounds, Bussard said. The victim was airlifted to an area hospital.

Six players contributed goals for the Royal boys' water polo team, but it wasn't nearly enough in a 17-6 loss Saturday to El Toro in the championship game of the Villa Park Classic.
The Highlanders - the top-ranked team in Southern Section Div. IV - trailed 10-2 at the half after giving up five unanswered goals and being held scoreless in the second quarter by the second-ranked team in Div. I.

LONG BEACH -- A memorial gathering for Bill Baker, the lifetime Long Beach resident and long-time community activist, will be held at the home of his son, Bill Baker Jr.
The event will be held Saturday, June, 18 at 2 p.m. in Villa Park. Friends and associates of Baker are invited, although space is limited.

, 100, of Lancaster, formerly of Leola, passed away to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 21st, at the Calvary Fellowship Homes. Born February 21, 1911 in Turgi, Switzerland, she was the daughter of the late Simon and Magdalena Fischer Steudler. Gertrude was the wife of the Rev. Albert E. Landis, who passed away in 1995. She was a founding member of Calvary Church, Lancaster.
A retired missionary, she served in the mission field for over 20 years in Chile until 1973. Gertrude was a graduate of Millersville Normal School and taught at the Mount Vernon one-room schoolhouse in Rapho Twp. She then graduated from Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL in 1940, the Bryan College in Dayton, TN in 1959 and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville in 1963, with ...
