Architects, engineers, urban planners and others will scour for the city tomorrow for projects to improve the look of Pittsburgh's neighborhoods. The group Architecture for Humanity Pittsburgh is hosting a scavenger hunt to encourage participants to find the "good, bad and ugly" in terms of infrastructure, transportation, sustainability and other community needs, said member Rachel Furmanski, an interior designer at Perkins Eastman Architects, Downtown.
The Yonkers Planning Board recently approved the site plan for the project, designed by Perkins Eastman Architects P.C. The general contractor, Andron Construction Corp. of Goldens Bridge, will erect a four-story, 165,000-square-foot center for medical, nursing, rehabilitative, palliative care, educational and home-care services on a 6.5-acre site owned by Elmsford-based Robert Martin Company L.L.C. Most of the 140-acre corporate park is owned by MackCali Realty Corp. The facility will be built according to the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design standards.
Spectrum Marketing Inc., of Gastonia, N.C., conducted a marketing study, and Perkins Eastman Architects PC, a New York-based design firm with widespread experience in senior housing projects, and Spokane-based NAC/Architecture Inc. came up with the concept of building the second tower and still are working on the design. In response to comments from focus groups and other market research, Rockwood plans to build larger apartments in The Summit and dining venues that are to be shared by residents of both structures and also update its wellness center.
Designed by New York City-based Perkins Eastman Architects P.C., North Street Community's features include: * Two-bedroom apartments ranging in size from 1,000 to 1,600 square feet; * Extra wide doors and corridors, assistance devices in bathrooms, emergency pull cords and call system, and ADA compliant fixtures; * Terraces for all first-floor units; * Elevators in the residential buildings and parking garage; and * Two-level parking structure.
Renovation of a 37,000-square-foot building housing the Falk Laboratory School in Oakland should be finished by March. Completed is a 31,000-square-foot addition that houses 14 classrooms, an art studio, computer lab, cafeteria, science room, library and support areas, said Dr. Marian Vollmer, a school spokesperson. Although a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating is not being sought, the school will have green components such as a roof that will absorb 80 percent of rainwater, low-flow toilets and motion sensors on faucets to decrease water usage. The private elementary school at the University of Pittsburgh, with 310 students, expects enrollment to increase to 410. Perkins Eastman Architects was the architect for the $20.3 million project. Architecture is meant to be experienced, not just observed. We all know Pittsburgh has lots of great architecture. You can see that readily from the edge of Mt. Washington or on a quick drive through Oakland. But, Pittsburgh also has lots of great architectural experiences -- interior spaces that can inspire you, excite you, calm you, make you feel part of a community, or stir personal thoughts and memories.

PITTSBURGH, April 14 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Pittsburgh can now proudly claim the region's first net-zero energy home, 1820 Merriman Way, a for-sale townhouse in Riverside Mews, a 48-unit green townhome community in the city's South Side neighborhood. To achieve net-zero energy, the townhome generates as much power as it uses on an annual basis through a variety of green building technologies, including an 8,000 watt photovoltaic array mounted on its roof. Pittsburgh has long been a leader in green buildings, but this newest addition to the city's green building portfolio is a testament that both public and private interests continue to challenge the boundaries of what's possible and achievable locally in terms of energy and resource efficiency, as well as in healthy homes and buildi...
