Three winters ago, residents of Pine Terrace Road in Cross Lanes noticed the road into their neighborhood was beginning to slip down the hill. Within a few months of the discovery, a large portion of the road had slipped several feet down the hillside, said resident Randy Long, 63. Only about half of the original road remains, and drivers must pull through a portion of a residents yard to access the neighborhood. After years of frustrated attempts to fix the road, residents of the neighborhood, which is a little more than a mile from the Cross Lanes exit of Interstate 64, have not given up hope. They are hoping to get some relief from the state. But state officials say funds will be hard to come by. Barbara Shell, 71, owns the property that her neighbors are using to drive around the sl...

Graduate studies and particularly doctoral work are often described as extremely challenging and demanding. Graduate students experience lofty academic demands, high levels of stress and anxiety and conflicts between various responsibilities. Through the self-examination of the experience of four doctoral students and a professor, this paper analyzes common challenges of graduate studies and presents the development and function of peer mentoring and peer support group aiming to guide the students and their mentor through the perilous passage of doctoral work. The student-led group we established served as a multifunctional mechanism offering members support in participating in the academic community by helping them acquire the discourse and social skills necessary for joining the grant...

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. -- More than a decade before a fiery 34- vehicle pileup last fall killed three people inside a curving, dimly lighted tunnel, authorities warned that the stretch of freeway was perilous and that steps should be taken to improve safety, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.
Highway officials did cut grooves into the pavement to improve traction, and it seemed to make a difference. But a state police request to routinely close the road in stormy weather was rejected. And later, the state raised the speed limit in the tunnel from 45 mph to 55 mph.

A revival is a new production of an old play or musical. Simple, right?
Not really. Like playing chess, or baking an apple pie, it's all in how you do it.

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Maybe it was the time the taxi dumped him at the Iraq-Kuwait border, leaving him alone in the middle of the desert. Or when he drew a crowd at a Baghdad food stand after using an Arabic phrase book to order. Or the moment a Kuwaiti cab driver almost punched him in the face when he balked at the $100 fare.
But at some point, Farris Hassan, a 16-year-old from Florida, realized that traveling to Iraq by himself was not the safest thing he could have done with his Christmas vacation.

The idea behind corridors is a connect-the-dots theory," says Terry Palmisano, senior wildlife biologist with the California Department of Fish & Game. "We have all these patches that, left by themselves, don't have a lot of value for wildlife. But when you link them together, these patches take on a greater value.
The DFG's Palmisano worries that the bill's passage might not do much unless it's tied to cash. "We have a lot of mandates we've been given over the years by the Legislature without funding or personnel, and we're struggling to keep up with them," she says.
"Even as the county experiences growth, if we can preserve some of these important areas like the Salinas River, we can help ensure that protected lands remain linked together," says Christina Fischer of The Nature C...

NEW YORK - A police officer is gunned down in his patrol car in Penn Hills, Pa., while waiting for backup. Near Seattle, four officers starting their day at a coffee shop are ambushed by an ex- con with a handgun. Another four officers are shot to death in Oakland, Calif., after a traffic stop gone awry.
Across the nation, 2009 was a particularly perilous year for officers involved in gun disputes. The number of officers killed in the line of duty by gunfire increased 24 percent from 2008, according to preliminary statistics compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a national nonprofit organization that tracks officer-related deaths.
