Pleasant late spring and early summer evenings give pause for thought. The thousand stars twinkling after darkness falls, the occasional meteor flashing faster than one can say, "Oh, my!" and the Milky Way slowly climbing in the east cause stargazers to contemplate the majesty of it all. Almost inevitably, thoughts and conversation drift toward the possibility of life elsewhere in the cosmos. Throughout the years, astronomers have wondered about this, too, but oftentimes have shied away from the topic. And for good reason.
