The expanding Virginia College of Birmingham, Ala., plans to enter the Sooner State with a Tulsa campus next year.
The private college, a subsidiary of the 3,200-employee Education Corp. of America, opened two campuses this year to raise its portfolio to 20 locations in nine states. Pending regulatory approval, the Tulsa campus will be one of up to four opened next year, said Don Keith, Virginia College's senior vice president of marketing and communications.

GIBSON CITY - Gibson City officials have placed on hold the hiring of a full-time police officer who was accused last year of sexually assaulting an Urbana woman.The City Council voted unanimously Jan. 9 to hire Kurt Hjort at a rate of $14.50 an hour, plus full benefits.City officials, however, put Hjort's hiring on hold when they learned he had been accused of rape last year while he was an Urbana police officer. No criminal charges were filed, but a federal civil lawsuit is pending.Both Mayor Dan Dickey and personnel committee Chairman Dennis Pardick, however, declined to comment on the matter because it involves personnel.Dickey issued a statement saying that while the council had voted to hire both Hjort and another officer, Carl Quinlan, only Quinlan would be hired on a part-time b...
