On Wednesday, General Motors Co. announced it would shut down its entire Saturn division after an agreement to sell it to Penske Automotive Group Inc. fell apart. And Findlay -- comprising 21 dealerships in Arizona, Idaho, Nevada and Utah -- owns two Saturn dealerships in St. George and Henderson, Nev.

Daimler AG says its Mercedes-Benz USA unit plans to take over United States distribution and marketing of the Smart mini car brand from Penske Automotive Group Inc. Daimler said the two companies have started discussions on the transition, expected by June. In Western Pennsylvania, Smart cars are sold at the Smart Center Pittsburgh, part of Mercedes-Benz of Pittsburgh in Shadyside, and earlier-generation versions, through 2007, are at Ferrante Motor Cars in Vandergrift, Westmoreland County.

Though a plan to ensure the future of Saturn vehicles has tumbled off its axis, an official of Evansville's Romain Automotive Group, which sells the Saturn brand, said Thursday it's not the end of the world. It's a disappointment, as we were fully expecting that deal (with Penske Automotive Group Inc. to buy GM's Saturn Division) to be completed (Wednesday)," said John Roettger, executive manager of Romain Cross Pointe Auto Park, which includes a Saturn dealership on the city's far East Side.
