Darlene Doerr and her work as founder of Creative Sharp Presentations were honored Sept. 29 at the annual Haggerty Museum of Art fall gala held at the museum. Doerr was presented the Kairos Award by Marquette University President Father Robert Wild. The award recognized her service to the fine arts at Marquette and as founder of Creative Sharp, which sponsors arts education programs in schools.
There to fete Doerr were her son, Tom Doerr, and his wife, Leslie, and daughter, Angie Doerr Stoller, who left her 10-month- old triplets at home with dad in southern California to see her mom honored. Beloved son and father, Jeffry C. Howard, an Augusta native and resident of Atlanta, Georgia, died Tuesday, November 17, 2009. He is survived by his mother, Ann Howard Kelly; brother, W. Thomas Howard, (Pat); niece, Erin Kelly Howard; sons, Jeffry Christopher Howard (Shannon), John Courtland Howard, and Jennings Carter Howard (Heather); granddaughters, Jocelyn Cadence and Julianna Charlese Howard; and grandson, Jarred Chase Howard. Mr. Howard is also survived by his fiancee', Sandee LaMotte.
Mr. Howard was a distinguished helicopter pilot in Vietnam in the 11th Light Infantry Brigade where he was awarded 18 medals, a Bronze Star, and Distinguished Flying Cross.

Each evening we sit down to dinner with World News Tonight. Our light conversation is sprinkled with "Shh, I want to hear this," and "Can you turn it up?" I am always disappointed when dinner doesn't make the table until closer to 7 p.m. Pat Sajak was never a substitute for Peter Jennings.

VIRGINIA BEACH - Novella Irene Sims, 87, passed away April 11, 2008, in a local hospital. Mrs. Sims was born and raised in Sand Springs, Okla., and had lived in the Tidewater area her entire adult life. She was the wife of the late Steve J. Sims, and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend who will be deeply missed. She loved animals, and was a past officer for the Tidewater Kennel Club.
Survivors include her son, Steve J. Sims II and his wife Yvette of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Molly S. Sims of Charlotte, N.C., Baxter W. Sims, Vachelle Ogden and Marcy Ogden, all of Virginia Beach; a special niece, Pat Leach of Jennings, Okla.; and several extended family members and friends in Oklahoma and Georgia.

WASHINGTON - It took three election losses as the Democratic presidential candidate to push William Jennings Bryan onto the Chautauqua circuit expounding a version of fundamentalist Christianity that would make Pat Robertson seem as tame as the Archbishop of Canterbury.
It took only one presidential loss - although surely the most controversial one in U.S. history - to send Al Gore onto the true believer's lecture trail spreading the doctrine of catastrophic climate change.
