I am the son of an over-the-road truck driver who became a Teamsters union official.
I think my dad found the office confining like I often do when I look out the window at the newspaper and know the fish are biting.

If you're thinking of flying or taking a cruise in 2007 that will include destinations in Canada, the Caribbean, or Mexico, you should plan to get a passport this fall. Under new government regulations, by Dec. 31, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada - - plus Bermuda and Panama -- will be required to have a passport to enter or re-enter the United States. A year later, on Dec. 31, 2007, the requirement will be extended to land-based border crossings as well.
This is a change from prior travel requirements under which you could go to Canada, Mexico or most Caribbean countries and re-enter the States with a driver's license and birth certificate.

BANGOR - As temperatures begin to dip below zero this winter and school vacations near, the cost of escape to a warm, sandy Caribbean or Mexican beach now will need to include the price of a passport.
Beginning Tuesday, anyone flying to Canada, Mexico and countries in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean or Bermuda will be required to hold a valid U.S. passport.

TORONTO Canadian and U.S. citizens are lining up for passports to meet tougher U.S. border rules that take effect this month. Canadian authorities fear the rules will keep more Americans at home.
Starting Jan. 23, all airline passengers landing in the United States will have to carry a passport, not just the driver's license and birth certificate that can now be used by Canadians crossing the border and by U.S. citizens returning from Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

WASHINGTON The Bush administration is poised to suspend a major post-9/11 security initiative to cope with increasingly angry complaints from Americans whose summer vacations are threatened by new passport rules.
A proposal set to be announced as early as today will temporarily waive a requirement that U.S. passports be used for air travel to and from Canada and Mexico, provided the traveler can prove he or she has already applied for a passport, officials said Thursday.

For Jim Thompson, Canada is a lot closer than the view across the St. Croix River from his second-floor office.
Thompson is American, but lives across the river in Oak Bay and is married to a Canadian. As executive director of the Downeast Heritage Museum, he often crosses the Ferry Point Bridge separating the two nations six times in one day, between commuting and attending meetings.

Canada's New Government is taking positive action to improve passport services for Canadians. And unlike the previous government, we are delivering results. In only a few months, we have increased Passport Canada's capacity by 40 per cent, we have launched the simplified passport renewal process and we are announcing today the new guarantor policy," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
