  • HOUSTON - Pinch-runner Josh Harrison scored on a passed ball for the first of Pittsburgh's three runs in the 11th and rookie Alex Presley drove in his third run of the game later in the inning to lead the Pirates to a 7-5 win over the mistake-prone Houston Astros on Sunday. Brandon Wood doubled to start the 10th and was replaced by Harrison. Xavier Paul reached on an error when Houston closer Mark Melancon (5-3) couldn't handle his dribbler that sent Harrison to third.

  • For most voters, weighing the merits of the proposed tax cap on the November ballot is an exercise in trying to foresee the future. But residents of Saco, a city that experimented with a short-lived tax cap decades ago, may be more inclined to look to the past. Saco passed a citywide property tax cap in 1979. Like the referendum proposed by Carol Palesky, the measure limited property taxes to 1 percent of assessed valuation and allowed for no more than 2 percent annual growth.

  • Watching and listening to our elected congressmen and senators stumble toward the latest deadline for addressing the debt limit crisis by rhetorically scratching and clawing at each other is at best annoying and at worse numbing. That "crisis," like previous crises generated by the same issue and similar circumstances, was created by previous Congresses unnecessarily (unless you believe political and legislative posturing is necessary), by repeatedly voting to limit by statute the level of our federal government's debt to less than the amount required to operate the government as mandated by the laws that -- you guessed it -- were passed by Congresses past and present.

  • By most measures, California's Legislature performed dismally this past session. It passed a budget a record 100 days late, and grossly underestimated the fiscal crisis - a situation so severe that lawmakers returned to the Capitol earlier this month for a special session to grapple with a $6.1 billion deficit.

  • The cover story in this month's issue of the British rock mag Q features the nearly sneering mug of Liam Gallagher, equally revered and reviled frontman with Brit-pop Renaissance leaders Oasis. With typical Gallagherian subtlety, Liam employs the pages within to 1) tear down his big brother, Oasis guitarist and songwriter Noel, in a continuation of the sibling in-print bloodbath that has been going on for nearly 20 years, and, it seems, has finally split Oasis in half; and 2) proclaim his new band, Beady Eye -- Oasis without Noel, essentially -- the greatest band on this planet or any other. This makes for mildly amusing press. But the cold, hard fact is, Liam Gallagher is wrong. Beady Eye is pretty far from the greatest band in the world. In fact, its debut, while it has its...

  • PITTSBURGH -- Ben Roethlisberger passed for two touchdowns and set a team record for career completions against error-prone Cincinnati, as Pittsburgh won 35-7.

  • This week The Taos Bark pays homage to a great animal lover. She was a compassionate woman, who gave to animal organizations and always, always had a dog in her arms. Her love of horses was legendary. Elizabeth Taylor passed away this past week. One of the greats, she is a legend and last of "OId Hollywood" where stars were bigger than life. Movie magazines such as Modern Screen and Photoplay were avidly read allowing you to enter into the private and intimate life of Miss Taylor.

  • Don't call bonds boring anymore. Despite a reputation for being a slow-growing alternative to stocks for the risk-averse, bonds just passed stocks' long-term performance over the past 30 years.

  • The dark days of Deere & Co.'s construction and forestry division appear to have passed. Sales have boomed in the division over the past two years, and with that has come waves of hiring at John Deere Dubuque Works.

  • It wouldn't be summertime in the Tri Cities area without the Boys Invitational Baseball Tournament in Colonial Heights. It is a youth baseball tradition that has been passed on for the past 51 years and has transcended generations.
