Regulars at the Cardinals Club and Cafe and people in Dixwell have long memories -- of a time long before it landed in the news as a "problem club," when 10 young black buddies founded it as a clubhouse and raised enough to buy a burned-out bar at 320 Ashmun St. People remember the Halloween parties the Cardinals Club used to throw for kids and other ways it was a community asset.
Marge Schott, the outspoken former owner of the Cincinnati Reds who was repeatedly suspended from major league baseball for racist statements, died Tuesday. She was 75. A chain smoker, Schott was hospitalized three weeks ago with breathing problems. She had suffered from lung problems in recent years. Christ Hospital in Cincinnati declined to release the cause of death. On behalf of the entire Reds organization, we extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family of Mrs. Schott and her many friends, said Carl Lindner, the teams chief executive officer. She will be remembered for her love of baseball and her passion for the Cincinnati Reds. Since selling controlling interest in the Reds under pressure from baseball officials in October 1999, Schott had appeared infrequently in...

That's not what the games are at all; they're parties. I've been out of college for 13 years, but, for now anyway, I remember that. Who cares if it's a "big enough win"? It's exciting! It's fun! Rush the court, kids. You don't know if you'll get the opportunity again. I know I sure didn't.
A spokesperson said, "The Jolly Club has made such an impact on my life, because I'm one of the club members children. What's so special' about the club is that everybody got along with each other. I remember as a child going to the meetings and playing with other member's kids, but what the club has meant to me is that it was family oriented, and the club members would discipline the children if we got out of order. There are so many fond memories of the social club, which is why the children volunteered to bring this special event together," she continued. Those gatherings were a personification of the club's theme: (I Remember When), which was to "direct, fortify, invigorate, encourage and stimulate the minds of young married couples. Once a year, the members of the club would have ...

How to get invited back Here's a checklist formulated with the help of etiquette expert Anna Post. - Be on time for a seated dinner. There's a 15-minute grace period. After that, call if you're running late. And insist that they start dinner without you. - There are no taboo tabletop topics anymore, but why risk unpleasantness? Remember: Not everyone thinks as you do about politics, religion, current events. - If you really detest dogs or kids, find a different table to mooch at. - Bring a gift (or send one later). - If you're bringing flowers, arrange in a vase first. - Don't expect the host to serve the wine or food you bring unless previously discussed. - Big or small party, always thank the hosts before you leave. - Not required, but a thank-you note is always welcome. And o...
* Bill Smith's column in Saturday's Gazette-Mail was a very warm and lovely story about his father. I have the same feelings about my dad and remember how in the 1940s he used to hold watermelon parties in the back yard for the neighborhood kids. He never had a bad word for anyone. * No, global warming does not exist. That is for foolish people such as Al Gore who was just as bad a vice president as a meteorologist.
