NORMAL -- If you weren't looking for it, you might never know it was there. At the south end of Henry Street, a small, gravel road tucked off to the left leads a half mile down to a water retention basin. The land serves not only as a retention basin, but also as a cricket field.

Maine's high school gymnasts have been preparing for what may be a bittersweet state championship meet today in Skowhegan. Six teams - Skowhegan, Kennebunk, Noble, Biddeford, Mountain Valley and Old Town - will hit the floor, the beams, bars and vault as they compete for what could be an historic final state title.
Like a growing number of states, West Virginia was aiming to make a dent in its fast-growing deer population when it created its first- ever September hunting season this year. But the upshot of such changes across the country often is more hunters spending more time - and money - pursuing deer. Federal government figures show more than 10 million big game hunters spent approximately $11.8 billion annually, a number that has increased despite waning participation in the sport.
The emotional ceremony at Dodger Stadium on Friday honoring Pasadena's native son (and my personal favorite sports hero) Jackie Robinson brought me to tears. Clearly what this man meant to baseball transcends sports and represents a great portion of the fabric of our nation's culture. However, the lack of interest among fellow African Americans as evidenced by their lack of attendance at this event and in their lack of participation in the sport of baseball in general is a crying shame. Sitting in the field level near the right-field foul pole, it seemed as if there were more on the field participating in the festivities with Jackie's widow Rachel than there were in the stands.
