• Fighter Jet in Vienna Honors Veterans: ; Aircraft That Was Used for Training Is On Loan From Federal Government

VIENNA - A fighter jet used for training in the Korean and Vietnam wars has rested in Jackson Memorial Park in Vienna for nearly 40 years. Property of the U.S. Air Force, the F84F was donated to Vienna in 1971 at the request of the local Sky Sharks Model Airplane Club. After Sept. 11, 2001, the federal government took back ownership of the plane.

• Dubuque Not Immune From Tornadoes

Big twisters stay away as of late The most recent tornado to strike Dubuque County was a mild F1-rated storm that damaged more than 1,000 trees at New Wine Park near New Vienna, Iowa, on May 25, 2008. Grant County's most recent tornado briefly touched down five miles north of Dickeyville, Wis., on April 26, 2009. It was rated as F0 (the weakest tornado category). The most recent tornado in Jo Daviess County was an F0 twister that briefly touched down about two miles south of Scales Mound, Ill., on June 1, 2007. Source: National Climatic Data Center Some stories credit a blessing by Bishop Loras for protecting Dubuque from tornadoes. Another says local topographical features like the bluffs and river thwart tornadoes from striking Dubuque.

• High School Softball - State Tournament: ; Lincoln County, Ritchie Claim Titles

VIENNA - Lincoln County captured the school's first state championship in any sport Thursday. Freshman Brooke West struck out 11 to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 victory over John Marshall in the Class AAA championship game at Jackson Park in Vienna. (See Page 2B for scores and all-tournament teams.)
