The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana is trumpeting that the use of St. Tammany Parish jail's infamous "squirrel cages" to house mentally ill inmates has come to an end.

The Coast Guard is withdrawing its proposed rule concerning the regulation governing the operation of the SR 433 Bridge over Bayou Liberty, mile 2.0, St. Tammany Parish, Slidell, LA. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (the bridge owner) proposed a change in the operating schedule to reduce the hours of manned operation of the bridge to make more efficient use of personnel and operating resources. Based on public comments expressing concern with the impact the proposed changes would have on public access to the waterway, the bridge owner no longer desires to move forward with the proposed rule.

The Fitch Ratings service has given an A rating to $53.1 million in bonds St. Tammany Parish Hospital plans to sell later this month. Tim Lessing, the hospital's chief financial officer, said the proceeds will be used refinance existing debt.
The bond sale will allow STPH to speed up repayment of money borrowed going back to 1998, when the hospital underwent a major physical expansion. Lessing said there will also be enough cash to retire a $10 million line of credit the hospital obtained in 2004.
