Monica Pullano was thankful to be part of St. Mary Parish even if it was for just one more day, after parishioners heard the stunning announcement on Oct. 13, 2007, that the church would soon be closed.
As it turned out, members of St. Mary spent almost four additional years in their beloved Catholic church on a bank of the Erie Canal in downtown Lockport.

The church has grown from a congregation of 60 parishioners, to 700 families, according to church officials.

KETTERING -- Jose Perez has a simple reason to explain why he's opening his restaurant Sunday for a benefit for a parish nearly 700 miles away in tornado-stricken Joplin, Mo.: "I want to follow the cross.
The devout Catholic and father of 10 was inspired by photos of St. Mary Parish before and after May's devastating tornado. The first photo shows a large modern structure not unlike his own beloved Ascension church in Kettering; the second reveals the skeleton of the school and the church. Only the large cross, virtually untouched, presides over the ruin.
