St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Chestnut Street belies the long history of its parish.
The church's sweeping sloped roof and triangular shape -- constructed between 1968 and 1970 -- resemble a dove. Modern stained- glass windows run from floor to ceiling behind the altar, and a new crucifix is suspended from the ceiling.

Parish to celebrate 'Festival of the Rose'
St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish will celebrate its 10th annual "Festival of the Rose," through Sunday, May 17, at the Skaggs Catholic Center, 11800 S. 300 East, Draper. The owner of a consulting engineering firm charged with conspiracy to bribe the former president of St. John the Baptist Parish pleaded guilty today.
Prosecutors said Ray Anthony Davezac, 55, of Destrehan, who owned and operated Davezac Consulting Engineers, paid $5,000 as a bribe -- solicited May 5 by William Hubbard -- in exchange for a parish contract.

Father Herbert Joseph Wellmeier, a priest of the Diocese of Savannah for almost 50 years, died Tuesday, October 18, at Candler Hospital in Savannah.
A native of Dayton, Ohio and of German descent, Father Wellmeier was sent to serve in the mission territory of Georgia shortly after his ordination on May 26, 1956. His last assignment was as pastor of St. Anne Parish in Richmond Hill before retiring to live at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in 2003.

* More than 150 members of Temple Beth Or in Washington Township welcomed Rabbi Ruth Zlotnick as their new spiritual leader at a Fourth of July barbecue on the synagogue's grounds. Zlotnick, whose first Sabbath service at the synagogue followed, replaces Rabbi Peter Berg, who accepted a position as senior rabbi at Atlanta's Hebrew Benevolent Congregation. Zlotnick had served as rabbi at the Central Synagogue in Manhattan since 2002. She also was associate rabbi and director of lifelong learning for Synagogue 2000, a national project aimed at revitalizing synagogues in all streams of American Judaism. A native of Rockland County, N.Y., she was ordained at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she earned a master's in Hebrew letters.
