VIRGINIA BEACH - Geraldine Marie Deegan, 68, died April 12, 2007, at Sentara Leigh Hospital after a long illness.
She was a registered nurse, nursing instructor and clinical nurse specialist. She taught at DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk until its closure and then at Sentara Home Health Services until her retirement in 2002. She was a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and of the Virginia Nurses Association. She was also the wife of a career Navy officer and mother of their two children, one of whom followed her into the nursing profession as a family nurse practitioner. She was a member of Church of the Ascension Catholic parish in Virginia Beach.

On Jan. 26-27, there were no Masses at the Church of the Ascension in Hamden. The doors were locked and the Catholics of the parish were forced to attend services at neighboring churches.
What is the reason? No priest could be found to take over for the pastor while he was on a much deserved vacation. Why could no spiritual leader be found? Perhaps because many who are hearing God's call to religious life are being rejected based on gender, marital status or sexual orientation.

For infant product manufacturer Crown Crafts Inc., 2007 developed into a seesaw year bearing the high of a new $12.4-million acquisition and lows associated with the troubled Asian toy industry.
Crown Crafts Inc., the nation's largest producer of infant and toddler bedding, bibs and bath items, is headquartered in Ascension Parish. It thrives by one determining factor: birth rates. U.S. births grew steadily between 2002 and 2006, dipping only incrementally in 2007. That factor helps Crown Crafts plow ahead in a retail economy that undoubtedly is strapped under the weight of high fuel and food prices.
