CANNES, France - The cinematic planets aligned perfectly for the the Cannes Film Festival, which opened Wednesday with the premiere of Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris," a frothy air kiss to the culture that has long venerated the 75-year-old-director.
What better way to kick off the 64th edition of Cannes than with a film that, in addition to celebrating Paris in the Twenties, and la Belle Epoque, finds Allen in his most playful, meltingly romantic mood in years?

Chanel shows up unannounced and essentially offers to play the role of kept woman. She wants security and, more importantly, an entry into high society. In the scenes that follow, writer-director Anne Fontaine portrays with marvelous subtlety the gradual shift in power between the pair. At first, Chanel is hidden away when [Etienne Balsan] has guests. Over time, though, she crashes the party and, thanks to her beauty, wit and audacious fashion experiments, becomes an indispensable part of the scene, captivating celebrity friends and titans .of commerce. The surprisingly touching tipping point arrives when Balsan realizes he needs her more than she needs him.
The realization is occasioned by an encounter that is the heart of the movie. Chanel enters into an affair with a close friend of ...

Whether talking generally or about a specific production, we tend to refer to operas by composer: Verdi's Falstaff, Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro, Britten's Billy Budd, Handel's Radamisto. We know there's a human story behind each one, adapted by a librettist and given shape by a director and designers; but in the usual way of the world, the composer dominates.
That musical shorthand could be applied to Kaija Saariaho's Adriana Mater, which received its American premiere Saturday at the Santa Fe Opera, but it wouldn't be appropriate. The work is such a piece of organic teamwork -- especially now, in its third production since the April 2006 Paris premiere and the February 2008 Helsinki mounting -- that it should be referred to as by Saariaho, librettist Amin Maalouf and director Peter...

Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird" Suite is classical Top 40 for sure, but conductor Gianandrea Noseda thinks there's a better way to experience the composer's first big success.
Stravinsky was virtually unknown until the Paris premiere of "The Firebird" ballet in 1910.

Three weeks, two countries, one unforgettable experience. That's how Emily Davidson describes her summer trip. The Longwood University junior, who hails from Hatton Point, traveled abroad for a three-week playwriting course at England's Middlesex University. She admits she was nervous about the journey - it was the longest trip she'd ever taken and her first time out of the country. In the end though, the things that concerned her worked themselves out and she had a wonderful time. An English major with a concentration in creative writing, Emily watched a play at Shakespeare's Globe, a re- creation of the theatre where the bard's plays opened. Other highlights included a guided coach tour of London featuring Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the houses of Parliament and the Tower of London. W...

The Oscar buzz was in the air as stars and VIPs gathered at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater for the premiere of "Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's latest comedy. Afterward all the talk was about the possibility of more nominations for the three-time Oscar winner.
That, even though Allen, the film's writer-director, "stayed in New York," according to his publicist, and wasn't there to feel all the love that was in the after-party lobby. Allen and his stars Michael Sheen and Rachel McAdams had also premiered the comedy in the Big Apple just the night before, but that didn't stop Sheen from zipping into town along with Owen Wilson, who has the leading role in the movie, playing a screenwriter turned novelist who has a very surreal (and very funny) Pa...

The show started with a film and voiceover of an extraordinary sunrise that was followed by a vivid blackand-white, bold video of Grace Jones imagery. XuIy Bet opened the show. First seen at his premiere in Paris, France, during the late '80s, his show was awesome. Here at the New York shows, his clothes are super chic, honey fresh, functional and voluptuous. For day, XuIy Bet's creative director, Lamine Badián Kouyate, focuses on suits with thin-legged pants or detailed, yet fitted skirts. His colors are electric. There are big, beautiful scarves and fashionable big bags. His black leather, form-fitting dresses are the best. He jumps into fall with a leather jumpsuit. Adding to the excitement in his show were star models such as Alek, Tyson Beckford and Ms. Grace Jones herself. When th...

All the world's a screen A devoted culture vulture with deep pockets and a savvy sense of scheduling could conceivably jet about Europe over the course of about 10 weeks to take in two evenings of ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, another at the Paris Opera House, two plays at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, and full evenings of opera at La Scala in Milan, London's Royal Opera House, the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam, and in the streets of Mantua. That, however, may not prove entirely practical for everyone, and so The Screen, the 165-seat cinema house at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design, is offering an alternative. Beginning Jan. 21, it will be presenting high-definition broadcasts of cultural events weekend after weekend, starting with precisely that itinerary ...

A four-act opera by French composer Georges Bizet, Carmen takes place in Seville, Spain, in the early 1800s.
The work scandalized audiences at its 1875 Paris premiere, not only for the smoky sensuality of the title character, but also for the cigarette smoke produced on stage by the realistic cigarette- factory girls.
