Nearly 21,000 out-of-work West Virginians are expected to get a 20-week extension to their federal unemployment benefits, thanks to a filibuster-breaking vote cast by the states newest senator. While becoming a practicing attorney in New York involves years of law school culminating in an extensive comprehensive examination, there are no such requirements for the paralegals that assist them in many of their day-to-day tasks. At least not yet.
Taking a cue from actions in other states, the Empire State Alliance of Paralegal Associations, made up of several paralegal associations from around New York, is looking to change that, introducing a proposal that would create a voluntary certification program for paralegals in an effort to prevent those with no legal training from representing themselves as paralegals.
