In recent years foreign direct investment in developing nations has come under threat by government policies seeking to expropriate or nationalize the assets of foreign corporations. A variety of political and economic motivations have given rise to expropriation activities. This paper examines both the political, economic and legal basis underpinning these expropriation activities and outlines a corporate risk management strategy designed to confront these emerging political/economic threats.

Emerging market banks have sailed through the global financial crisis in relatively good shape. They have husbanded their resources and remain reluctant to lend aggressively, following an increase in non-performing loans. These banks are generally well capitalized, however, and conservative by nature. Under the eyes of watchful regulators, they have kept loan-to-deposit ratios in balance. The emerging markets also remain highly dependent on the developed world for export markets, although domestic demand in Asia and other emerging markets is becoming ever more important. Many large banks are fleeing developed countries, or cutting back their home operations, and increasing their exposure in emerging markets. The winners of the Survey on Best Emerging Market Banks are presented.

Martin Scorsese's extraordinary musical film shows the Rolling Stones as they've never been seen before. Filming at the famed Beacon Theatre in New York City in fall 2006, Scorsese assembled a legendary team of cinematographers to capture the raw energy of the stoned band, utilizing more than 18 cameras to pan and zoom in on every conceivable bit of the action. "Shine a Light" focuses on the music, dispensing with the talking-head device and opting instead for spare vintage newsreel and TV footage as the only non-performance-based commentary on the band. Rolling Stone magazine (appropriately) says "This you-are-there spellbinder is a master director shining his light on the best rock band on the planet.

Much has changed in the banking world over the past year -- although not as much as might have been expected at the start of 2009. Many of the world's leading banks have returned to profitability and repaid government bailouts. The industry is clearly in much better shape than it was a year ago, but there is still a tendency to hoard capital, and banks remain reluctant to lend, even to creditworthy borrowers. Of course, conditions vary in markets around the world. Among emerging market banks, those in China and India have performed well, whereas those in Central and Eastern Europe are still struggling. Some banks in developed markets have been successful in rebuilding their capital through rights offerings and the placement of shares. In the US, President Barack Obama has proposed to in...
