• Satellite Business Taking Off in Palo Alto

On the assembly floor at Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, technicians in white lab coats and gauzy hairnets swarm a massive silver-skinned box, many wearing headlamps as they prod the complex innards of what will be one of the highest-capacity communications satellites ever built. The Jupiter satellite will provide broadband Internet to as many as 2 million households, joining 66 other SS/L-built communications satellites circling the globe in sync with the Earth's rotation. That represents nearly one-fourth of the roughly 300 communications satellites in geosynchronous orbit.
