BRINY BREEZES, Fla. - Nestled conspicuously amid multimillion- dollar homes and splashy high-rise condos, the coastal trailer-park town of Briny Breezes seems out of place, a relic of Old Florida that may soon vanish.
If residents approve the Palm Beach County community's sale to a developer for more than a half-billion dollars, almost every owner of the 488 trailers would become an instant millionaire. Not a bad return on investment if you consider that some bought their homes as recently as a decade ago for $35,000.

A former Florida official faces felony corruption charges for allegedly failing to disclose thousands of dollars in gifts from Ocean Properties Ltd. that were made while she was considering the developer's proposal for a convention center hotel in West Palm Beach.

In 2002 after the county's affirmative action program sunset, Palm Beach County Commissioners opted to switch to a "race-neutral" Small Business Enterprise (SBE) program. A key proponent was ex-Commissioner Mary McCarty who complained that the former affirmative action program was designed merely to "help...

The Florida Research Park, formerly Park of Commerce on the Bee Line Highway, two miles from Mecca Farms, continues to be the preferred choice of several county commissioners, including Mary McCarty and Warren Newell. Administrative Assistant Shirley Meeks noted that Commissioner Addie Green feels that there needs to be a "thorough investigation of all of the options," in the process, making sure that "every "T" is crossed and every "I" dotted, "laying everything out on the table; all the pros and cons regarding each site." Then, once all the information is gathered, "bring it back to the Board of County Commissioners and let them make a decision." County Board Administrator Bob Weisman concurred, adding that the Board was "clearly split with no majority for any site.
