Julene K. Poole, a retired educator who taught in the Palm Beach County School system for more than 30 years, remembers those times when schools were segregated. She attended Roosevelt High and graduated in 1958. According to Mrs. Poole, even though the education system was separate and unequal, she said that "her teachers offered a parental-like concern that went beyond their teaching duties". She also mentioned that "they were much more caring while most of them not only lived in our community but they often visited the homes of students. Back then, when most Blacks were largely poor, materialism was not an issue. Mrs. Poole recalled having only three or four sets of clothes in her closet, a set for school, one for play and one for church. As for shoes, there were just two pairs: one...
It may be coming down to 'crunch time' for the Palm Beach County School District, including its 170,215 studentbase, parents and teacher/administrators. Facing far more stringept No Child Left Behind (NCLB) measures, coupled by the fact that only 24 percent of schools are currently making their Annual Yearly Progress (AYP), not to mention a looming ACLU lawsuit challenging the District's poor graduation rates - and it becomes clear to many critics that 'we're all in this leaky boat together," and based on the solutions we devise, we will either 'sink or swim.' The problem is that the Palm Beach County School District's own data paints a dismal picture with 80 percent of the District's students testing below the state's standards, currently attending predominantly "A" and "B" schools, be...
I think he's very accomplished. I can tell you he has the Democratic platform, and he actually works on it. And he's a good human person. He's not well known because he's not a bad guy. He's the real deal. There's no 'star' about him. Look, they made Sarah Palin a star, and she can't spell 'go,'" she said. "In Palm Beach County, they don't know him," [Addie Greene] said. "But it's your responsibility to get to know your elected officials. On the other hand, [Kendrick Meek] should have made himself known in this district if he knew he was going to run for the Senate. "It's May. And I don't know any campaign that peaked too soon and won the election. I'm going to work hard. I'm going to be throughout the state of Florida. I'm going to be dedicated. We will have people knocking on doors....

The Florida Research Park, formerly Park of Commerce on the Bee Line Highway, two miles from Mecca Farms, continues to be the preferred choice of several county commissioners, including Mary McCarty and Warren Newell. Administrative Assistant Shirley Meeks noted that Commissioner Addie Green feels that there needs to be a "thorough investigation of all of the options," in the process, making sure that "every "T" is crossed and every "I" dotted, "laying everything out on the table; all the pros and cons regarding each site." Then, once all the information is gathered, "bring it back to the Board of County Commissioners and let them make a decision." County Board Administrator Bob Weisman concurred, adding that the Board was "clearly split with no majority for any site. This past Decem...
[Jane Bassa Tolliver] is primarily responsible for the creation and planning of the semi-formal event that was held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009. This special awards dinner centered on an important cultural concept derived from the "birth of an idea" that started out as Tolliver indicates, "A labor of love." This is what inspired her to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of African Americans who were chosen for significant achievements pand their contributions to minority communities. When asked how all of this connects to the concept of awarding "champions & pioneers" and how & why those were honored that, evening, Tolliver explained that honorees chosen this year, as well as those honored in the past, "are persons who have given ...
