The claimant received workers' compensation benefits after he was injured at a jobsite by a crane operated by a third party.

Damages awarded to an age discrimination plaintiff for "severe emotional distress" are not excludable from gross income, the U.S. Tax Court has ruled. The plaintiff was laid off as part of a workforce reduction. His supervisor told him that he was selected for termination on the basis of his age and pay.
He filed an age discrimination lawsuit, which settled for $120,000. The settlement included $44,250 in lost wages and $75,750 for emotional damages and pain and suffering.

Two Salt Lake County residents have been sentenced in federal court for their part in an insurance fraud that netted more than $70,000.
Mele Vi and Siosi Tualanga were indicted and arrested on charges of communications fraud and identity theft in November against Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Vi used the personal information of Melanie Kaivelata and Tualanga filed a claim against Kaivelata's homeowners policy. Tualanga claimed that Kaivelata's dog entered Tualanga's yard and knocked her off her ladder, causing $72,000 worth of pain and suffering. Vi and Tualanga received a settlement check, which they cashed at Check City, and split the proceeds.
