It wasn't her first role, but playing Queen Padme Amidala in "Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace" certainly put Natalie Portman's career on everyone's radar. It speaks well of her, if not the movie, that it's not what she's known for. With a string of good performances (and an Oscar nomination for "Closer"), Portman, 28, is better known simply as a really good actress.
So much has changed within the motion picture industry over the past three decades that 1977 seems like a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. Those who saw the first of George Lucas' Star Wars films in theaters that year have had front-row seats for the cinematic and pop-culture revolutions that have been going on ever since: the movement away from movies as limited, individual creations to movies as amorphous franchises operating in perpetuity, and the immortal intellectual-property empires that stretch beyond the multiplex and beyond overseas and home-video markets into every conceivable domain of quotidian experience, buoyed by endless opportunities for merchandising and tie-ins. The more idealistic Star Wars fans may cling to the notion that Lucas' lasting contribution is a rec...
The opening of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" has brought out the expected array of incorrigible fans who do not seem the least bit queasy walking around dressed as storm troopers, queen- turned-senator Padme Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader or any of the freakish characters who have populated the various installments of the "Star Wars" saga. When observing the painstakingly accurate, expensive and emotionally invested costuming of the film's fans, one feels a brief flicker of admiration. Here are people with a remarkably high threshold for public embarrassment. No one may be kicking sand in their faces or plotting to give them wedgies, but rest assured there is laughter, eye-rolling and generous servings of get-a-life pity dished out by those who believe themselves ...

Looking for some things to do while you're waiting for the new "Star Wars" movie to open? There are a number of good ideas listed on the Lucasfilms Web site, www.starwars.com/kids. Try drawing a picture of Padme Amidala; put together a Tie Fighter holiday or make a Mustafar volcano.
SAN FRANCISCO - Within sight of the Golden Gate Bridge lies another landmark cherished by a small but fervent group of travelers: a life-sized replica of Yoda, George Lucas' master of the Force. Since the of the Jedi sage went up amid the Presidio's landscaped lawns in 2005, Star Wars fans have made a pilgrimage to take pictures with their beloved character and take in Lucasfilm Ltd.'s sleek headquarters.

Superhero and cartoon characters are integral parts of the electronic entertainment industry. With this in mind, I salute the meld of pop-culture character and video game with a look at Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (from LucasArts and Traveller's Tales, reviewed for PlayStation 3, rated E10+ for players 10 and older, $49.99). The epic saga of the Skywalker clan once again comes to brick- building life courtesy of the Lego universe in this third-person extravaganza.
