Stories about the Scissor Sisters tend to begin the same way. You quickly learn that some of the band members are named Del Marquis, Paddy Boom, and Ana Matronic. While these monikers are a great entry point into understanding a bit about the Scissor Sisters, the kitsch value they imply is unfair. The Scissor Sisters, you see, make great music; a bombastic explosion of '80s influences that aren't in fashion - the Bee Gees, not Gang of Four. A slew of hit singles in England has included a cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb," a song about coming out to one's mother ("Take Your Mama"), and most recently the majestic, Elton John-indebted ballad "Mary." If you don't have a sense of humor and the Scissor Sisters are walking down the street, look the other way, because when this band lets loose, it lets it all hang out. The quintet, four men and one woman decked out in their disco best, don't take themselves too seriously. Their music, on the other hand, is seriously fun. Scissor Sisters are certified superstars who sell millions of records and fill massive arenas with their funky mix of retro disco pop well, at least in England and the rest of Europe.
