DECATUR - When Army National Guard Specialist Nicholas Shaw was snowed in for 44 days last winter in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan, the individually wrapped snacks Americans had mailed made a huge difference.

In still keeping with the spirit of Thanksgiving, hundreds of volunteers took Saturday to give a little thanks for the troops, filling care packages full of reminders from home for those deployed overseas during the holidays.
As part of Operation Gratitude, volunteers manned an assembly line in a warehouse at the Army National Guard Armory in Van Nuys, packing boxes with donations of lotion, ChapStick, Girl Scout cookies, toothbrushes and toothpaste, energy drinks, knit scarves and hats, books, CDs and DVDs.
