Freeze the salaries, do the proper analysis and make the appropriate decision," Commissioner Steve Gonot urged at the Sept. 18 commission meeting. "We have an opportunity to get this fixed, that's why we have a pay range.
"Anyone who is at the max, or over the max, until such time as we can work down the priorities and do a compensation study, I think until such time they don't get the merit increases," [Mike Mahaney] said while advising officials to allow workers to get their pending four percent cost-of-living increases.
"This pattern of behavior has existed here for years," Mahaney said. "It's closer to $170,000 a year that is being paid."

Federal officials failed to keep track of how they doled out millions of dollars in transit benefits paid for Washington-area Pentagon employees to get to and from work, resulting in overpayments, double dipping and questionable public transit fares, a recent Pentagon review has found.
The increasingly generous subsidy, expected to cost about $60 million this year, pays workers to take mass transit or join van pools to help unclog the notoriously traffic-snarled roadways in and around the nation's capital.

Erie County lets its employees hold two or more county jobs only sparingly, and at no time are they to be paid while working two jobs at once.
But county auditors say that in reviewing the first five months of 2011 they found four instances of employees allowed to hold two jobs being paid for both at the same time. The double wages were rare, and amounted to only about $100 in overpayments.
