The New Orleans area had 528,600 jobs in September, more than the 524,900 in August and the 517,700 in August 2010. The goods- producing sector was down 200 jobs over August but equal with September 2010, while the service-providing sector was up 3,900 positions over the month and up 10,900 compared with a year ago.

The New Orleans area had 524,800 jobs in June, fewer than the 527,100 in May but more than the 521,900 in June 2010. The goods- producing sector was flat over May but up 1,900 compared with June 2010, while the service-providing sector was down 2,300 positions over the month but up 4,200 compared with a year ago.

It's back-to-school time. As a teacher I can feel the excitement starting to build. It's time to start watching for the back-to- school sales. Just like the students, I have a list of supplies for my classroom, but I always find extra things I'm convinced I can't live without.
Every year, the shopping starts with the purchase of a new large desk calendar. I buy folders in case some of the children don't have one. The ones I buy are purple to indicate they are for my music class. Purple has become my trademark. When students ask: "Why are all your folders purple?" I simply reply, "It's my favorite color!" Extra notebook paper is a must because the students frequently run out of it.
